Blantyre — Mighty Wanderers FC president Dr Thomson Mpinganjira and the club have donated K10 million to the Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) ahead of the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled to take place in Salima.

The donation was presented on Thursday at the club house in Blantyre, with K5 million contributed by Mpinganjira personally and the remaining K5 million coming from Mighty Wanderers FC.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Wanderers acting chief executive officer Welloce Kachingwe said the gesture reflects the club and its president’s commitment to maintaining a strong working relationship with the media and supporting the development of football in Malawi.

“I am pleased to present to you a donation of K10 million. From the amount, our president has contributed K5 million with the remainder coming from the club,” Kachingwe said.

He said the contribution was also intended to recognise the role sports journalists play in promoting and developing football through coverage, analysis and public engagement.

“This gesture is meant to appreciate the good work that sports journalists do in developing the game of football,” he added.

SWAM president Mphatso Malidadi thanked Mpinganjira and the Wanderers leadership for the financial support, saying the donation would play an important role in helping the association meet its financial obligations for the AGM.

Malidadi also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to working closely with football stakeholders across the country.

He said sports journalists have an important responsibility in contributing to the growth of the game through professional reporting and constructive engagement with clubs, players, administrators and other stakeholders.

The donation comes at a time when football stakeholders continue to emphasise the importance of collaboration between the media and sporting institutions in strengthening football development and improving coverage of the game.

For SWAM, the K10 million contribution provides financial support as the association prepares for its annual gathering in Salima, while for Wanderers, the gesture further demonstrates the club’s stated commitment to engaging with the sports media.

The AGM is expected to bring together members of SWAM to deliberate on matters concerning the association and the wider sports journalism profession in Malawi.
