Malawi Beach Soccer To Participate Cosafa Beach Soccer Championship

The Malawi Beach Soccer national team will participate in this year’s Cosafa Beach Soccer Championship scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa between 17-23 March after missing the past two editions in 2021 and 2022 due to financial problems.

Malawi participated in the inaugural competition, which was hosted by Seychelles in 2015, finishing as runners-up after a 9-4 loss to Madagascar in the final.

Meanwhile, the coach for Malawi Beach Soccer national team, Willy Kumilambe, has named a 25-member provisional squad to go into camp on Wednesday in preparation for the tournament.

According to the list the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has posted on its Facebook page, Kumilambe has included 10 players who were part of the 2022 Beach Soccer Afcon finals squad in Vilankulo, Mozambique.

They include goalkeepers Justin Bonongwe and Eddie Jamu; defenders Arnold Lasten, Martin Biliati and Blessings Likupe; midfielders Dala Simba, Isaac Kajamu and Frank Mwenelupembe as well as strikers Obrien Nkhukumba and Sandram Saddi.

Speaking in a separate interview over the call-up list, the Malawi beach soccer coach said he is confident with the listed players as they have been drawn from all centres in the country that are currently active.

“This is a squad that comprises fresh talents and experienced players and I am confident that with proper training, we can do better at the regional tournament,” he said.

On his part, Beach Soccer Association (BSA) of Malawi chairperson Gift Chimbalanga said the level of beach soccer standards has gone up in the country and it is good that the new FAM leadership is committed to seeing the country participating in many international tournaments.
