LILONGWE — Malawi Parliament is set to host more than 300 delegates from across the Commonwealth Africa Region as the country prepares to welcome parliamentary leaders for a major conference aimed at strengthening cooperation among legislatures.
Speaker of Parliament Honourable Sameer Suleman has welcomed delegations arriving from South Africa, Mauritius, Sierra Leone and Nigeria ahead of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region Conference and Annual General Meeting in Lilongwe.
The high-level gathering is expected to bring together Presidents of Parliaments, Speakers, Senators and other parliamentary representatives from across the region.
Preparations for the conference are already underway at Parliament, where several CPA committees have begun their meetings ahead of the main event.Sameer Suleman Hailed as Model of Good Leadership
Among the committees meeting are the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Steering Committee and the Programme, Planning and Finance Committee, which are expected to deliberate on issues relevant to parliamentary cooperation and the work of the CPA Africa Region.
The conference will officially open on Wednesday, August 12, at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
The meeting provides Malawi with an opportunity to showcase its parliamentary institutions while contributing to regional discussions on strengthening legislative cooperation, democratic governance and effective parliamentary systems.
The participation of more than 300 delegates is also expected to provide a platform for lawmakers from Commonwealth African countries to exchange experiences, discuss common challenges and explore ways of improving the effectiveness of Parliament in serving citizens.How Speaker Sameer Suleman Is Transforming Malawi’s Parliament
With delegations already arriving and committee meetings underway, Malawi Parliament is now in the final stages of preparations for what is expected to be one of the region’s major parliamentary gatherings.
