Chakwera Blunders To Fire Kayuni, Spare Chizuma

President Lazarus Chakwera Wednesday spared Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma but fired Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steven Kayuni. Chizuma Hit The Wall As Justice Nyirenda Rejects ACB Application To Recuse Himself From Kainja Case

The High Court in Lilongwe has dismissed with costs an application by the Anti Corruption Bureau for Judge Kenyata Nyirenda to recuse himself from a case where former Inspector General of Police, George Kainja, is challenging his arrest in relation to the Zuneth Sattar corruption case. Making his ruling Judge Kenyata Nyirenda said the reasons filed by ACB did not satisfy the court. Imran Saidi, ACB lawyer, said they wanted the court to remove Judge Kenyata Nyirenda from the case saying he is a 'conflicted person'' to handle the case with credibility. Kainja's lawyer, Gift Nankhuni, however, noted that in the current circumstance the Judge will continue to hear the case on a date to be advised.

High Court Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda has ordered for consolidation of an application to set aside the prohibition of Human Rights Ambassadors-HRA protests with another application for an injunction stopping demos for the same organization on July 20 2022. A group of Mbadwa zokhudzidwa za Malawi has raised concern with what they have described as “continued stubbornness” of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma who despite numerous calls for her to step down, remains in her position. Speaking to journalists in Lilongwe one of the leaders Agape Khombe says the group is also disappointed with President Lazarus Chakwera’s continued defiance to their calls. Group leader Redson Munlo says they expect the president to use his engagement with the press this evening to announce the firing of Chizuma. He told journalists that by relieving Chizuma of her duties, the president will have sent a strong message to others who are abusing their public offices.
