Speaking during the signing ceremony, Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha said the grant demonstrates the strong bilateral relations between Malawi and Japan.

Mwanamvekha said the equipment would directly address challenges facing Lilongwe City Council in maintaining and rehabilitating roads, improving its capacity to deliver essential infrastructure services.

He assured Japan that government would ensure transparency, accountability and maximum value for money in implementing the project.

Japan’s Ambassador to Malawi, Naito Yasushi, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s sustainable socio-economic development, describing road infrastructure as one of the country’s key priority areas.

The K4.4 billion grant is expected to strengthen Lilongwe’s road maintenance capacity and contribute to improved urban infrastructure.
