18 Ethiopians Illegal Immigrants Arrested

A total of 18 Ethiopian immigrants have been arrested for illegal entry into the country.

The Ethiopians have been arrested alongside a Malawian for aiding their entry.

Northern Region Immigration Department Public Relations Officer, Francis Chitambuli said the suspects were apprehended at Phwezi Road Block in Rumphi District whilst hiding inside a truck van registration number CA 8429.

Chitambuli said the truck was being driven by Perrie Chintika and it belongs to Almeida Transport Company.

He said the truck was carrying soap and toilet papers and had a Malawi Revenue Authority seal.

The 18 arrested immigrants will answer the offence of illegal entry into the country. Police also said the vehicle has been impounded.

Currently, the Ethiopians and the driver are being kept at Rumphi Prison awaiting a court appearance.
