The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Malawi has expressed renewed optimism for its own prospects in the upcoming 2025 elections, drawing inspiration from the recent victory of Donald Trump in the United States. Trump, the Republican candidate, secured the presidency with 277 electoral votes over Vice President Kamala Harris’s 244, marking a shift away from the incumbent Democratic administration.
DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba shared that Trump’s vision aligns closely with the policies and priorities of the DPP for governing Malawi. “Trump’s principles resonate with our party’s vision for Malawi,” Namalomba said, highlighting the DPP’s commitment to economic reform, social stability, and national development as key areas of alignment.

In a gesture of solidarity, DPP leader Peter Mutharika congratulated Trump on his victory, expressing admiration for his resilience and commitment to the principles that Republican supporters valued throughout the campaign.
Malawi’s next elections are scheduled for September 16, 2025, when citizens will vote for a new president, members of parliament, and local councilors. With the DPP rallying around Trump’s success, the party hopes to harness a similar wave of momentum as it strategizes for the upcoming race.
Namalomba emphasized that, like the Republican platform, the DPP is focused on restoring economic stability and fostering opportunities for Malawians. With the party’s leaders drawing inspiration from Trump’s victory, they aim to present a competitive platform that addresses the country’s pressing needs as Malawi prepares for a pivotal election year.
