Ritualist sentenced to 21 years for incest
A case of incest has led to the conviction and sentencing of Thomson Benson, a 32-year-old traditional doctor from Lilongwe District.
Benson was found guilty of having multiple sexual encounters with his stepdaughter since 2023.
According to Kawale Police Spokesperson Precious Mabvuto Phiri, Benson married a woman with a child from a previous relationship, and they resided together in Area 24. During the rainy season, Benson would send his wife to farm, creating an opportunity for him to abuse his stepdaughter.
Phiri said in February 2025, the victim discovered she was pregnant with her stepfather’s child and confided in her mother.

“The mother promptly reported the incident to the Area 24 Police Unit, leading to Benson’s swift arrest.
“Benson pleaded guilty to the charges and asked for leniency, citing his status as a first-time offender with family obligations,” he said.
He, however, said that Assistant Superintendent Evance Kantukule argued for a stringent sentence, emphasizing the severity of the crime.
Senior Resident Magistrate Blacious Kondowe concurred, sentencing Benson to 21 years in prison as a deterrent.
