Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman has hit back at government spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, questioning his authority to demand evidence over allegations of widespread corruption in government.

Suleman’s strong response follows Namalomba’s decision to give the Speaker seven days to produce evidence supporting his corruption allegations, setting the stage for a fresh confrontation between the two figures.

In a pointed rebuke, Suleman questioned whether Namalomba was acting as a police officer or an official of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), insisting that he had overstepped the boundaries of his role as a government or party spokesperson.

The Speaker maintained that he had sufficient evidence to support his claims and was prepared to work with the relevant authorities to ensure that justice prevails.

His remarks raise a critical question about how allegations of corruption should be handled, particularly when they involve public officials and the institutions responsible for fighting corruption.

Rather than treating the matter as a political exchange, Suleman said he was ready to engage the appropriate authorities over the allegations.

The development puts the spotlight on the importance of accountability, transparency and the role of independent investigative institutions in addressing suspected corruption.

However, the allegations remain allegations, and any wrongdoing would need to be established through a proper investigation and due process.

As the seven-day deadline announced by Namalomba draws attention, the central issue remains whether the allegations will lead to a formal investigation capable of establishing the facts.

For now, Suleman has made his position clear: he stands by his claims and says he is ready to cooperate with the relevant authorities.

Malawi Freedom Network will continue following developments in this unfolding political dispute.
