Lilongwe, Malawi – Former President Peter Mutharika has reiterated that it was his DPP government that abolished the Quota System in Malawi, dismissing claims that Lazarus Chakwera played a role in the reforms.
Speaking to supporters in northern Malawi, Mutharika emphasized that the Quota System reforms were completed during his tenure, before Chakwera assumed office. “It was I and my DPP government who abolished the Quota System, not Chakwera. He only came into government after the reforms were completed,” he said.

The Quota System, which allocated government positions based on regional representation, has been a long-standing topic of debate in Malawi. While reforms were praised for introducing merit-based appointments, some regions felt underrepresented, making the issue politically sensitive.

Political analysts note that Mutharika’s remarks may be part of efforts to solidify support in northern Malawi ahead of upcoming elections, where historical achievements are often highlighted to influence voters.
Mutharika’s comments have reignited discussions on Malawi’s political reforms and the legacy of the DPP government in reshaping government appointments, further fueling the debate on the impact of quota reforms in the country.
