**LILONGWE — President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has underscored the importance of a strong partnership between Government and the private sector, saying closer cooperation can play a critical role in driving Malawi’s economic development.

Mutharika made the remarks today at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe when he met representatives of the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), one of the country’s key business organisations.

The President said the relationship between Government and the business community remains important in addressing the country’s economic challenges and creating an environment capable of supporting investment, trade and national development.

Mutharika noted that Government has maintained a close working relationship with the MCCCI and emphasised the need to strengthen that cooperation as Malawi tackles a range of economic and developmental priorities.

He particularly highlighted areas requiring joint action, including the response to the effects of El Niño, trade and other initiatives aimed at strengthening the economy.

The President’s message comes at a time when Malawi continues to face significant economic pressures, making cooperation between the public and private sectors increasingly important.

A stronger partnership can help Government and businesses identify practical solutions to challenges affecting production, trade, investment and the livelihoods of ordinary Malawians.

Mutharika therefore called for continued engagement between the two sides, stressing the potential of collaboration to contribute to national development.

Speaking during the meeting, MCCCI President Ronald Ngwira expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage with the Head of State and reaffirmed the business community’s willingness to work with Government.

Ngwira pledged the support of the private sector in responding to the impact of El Niño and in strengthening trade.

The MCCCI’s commitment signals the business community’s readiness to participate in initiatives aimed at addressing economic challenges while supporting increased commercial activity.

The engagement between Mutharika and the MCCCI also underscores the importance of maintaining regular dialogue between policymakers and the private sector.

For Malawi to achieve sustainable economic growth, cooperation between Government and businesses remains essential, particularly in areas such as investment, trade, agricultural production, infrastructure, job creation and economic resilience.

The meeting at Kamuzu Palace has consequently reinforced a message of partnership, with both Government and the business community recognising that national development requires coordinated efforts across different sectors of the economy.

The challenge now is to translate such commitments into practical programmes that can improve economic opportunities, strengthen businesses and deliver tangible benefits to Malawians.

The Government-private sector partnership, if sustained and backed by concrete action, could become an important pillar in Malawi’s efforts to accelerate economic recovery and build a stronger and more resilient economy.
