Lilongwe, September 20, 2025 — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has taken an early lead in the 2025 Malawi presidential election, according to confirmed results announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja disclosed in a Saturday briefing that tallies from Likoma Council, Kasungu Municipality, Luchenza, and Mwanza put Mutharika in pole position with 50,131 votes.

His closest challenger, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has so far amassed 13,199 votes, while UTM Party’s Dr. Dalitso Kabambe stands at 3,939 votes.

The figures, though still partial, highlight strong momentum for Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party as counting continues across the country.Limpopo FM confirms Mutharika is 2025 presidential elections winner

What These Results Mean

While the announced votes represent only a fraction of the national tally, they provide the first official glimpse into how Malawians are voting in this hotly contested presidential race. With results still trickling in from other councils and municipalities, political analysts caution that the race remains far from over.

Election Updates Ongoing

MEC has urged patience as it works to compile and verify results from all constituencies. More updates are expected in the coming hours as tally centers across Malawi continue to transmit verified figures.
