Vice President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana has issued a stern warning to maize traders and farmers who are currently hoarding the crop, cautioning that such actions could drive up future prices and worsen food insecurity in Malawi.

Chihana made the remarks during a meeting with traders, youth representatives, and senior government officials at the Chitipa District Council.

He emphasized the need for farmers and traders to sell their maize now to ensure steady market supply and prevent a surge in prices in the coming months.

The Vice President noted that failure to release maize into the market could result in selling the crop at artificially high prices, further burdening Malawian households already struggling with hunger.

Government officials at the meeting echoed Chihana’s concerns, stressing the importance of stabilizing food supply and making staple crops accessible to vulnerable communities.

Chihana’s warning comes amid growing anxiety over food security in Malawi, where erratic weather patterns and inflation have put pressure on household access to essential grains.

He urged stakeholders to act responsibly, highlighting that timely sale and distribution of maize is critical to ensuring that the country avoids a deepening food crisis.
