Police in have arrested a 35-year-old man, Brighton Ngalonde, in connection with the theft of K104 million and the abduction of a Chinese national.
Confirming the development, Lilongwe Police spokesperson said the incident occurred on 24 January 2026 at a lodge within the city.
Chigalu explained that Ngalonde, together with three other suspects who are still at large, allegedly lured the victim into a fraudulent business deal involving the exchange of Malawian kwacha for United States dollars. The suspects reportedly convinced the Chinese national to enter their vehicle under the pretext of concluding the transaction.
While inside the vehicle, two additional suspects are said to have emerged from another car, forcefully seized the victim’s car keys and threatened him with a firearm. The assailants then stole K104 million and abducted the victim before later abandoning him in Area 47.
Police later apprehended Ngalonde, who is also known by the alias “Bizzo,” in Area 49. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining suspects believed to be involved in the crime.
Meanwhile, police have assured the public that efforts are being intensified to curb organised criminal activities in the capital and bring all perpetrators to justice.
