In a strongly worded statement released on April 26, 2026, the bank confirmed it has halted its backing of the flagship FDH Bank Premiership, as well as other football-related activities, following an ongoing impasse between the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

The decision comes just a day after a controversial and disorderly official launch of the league at Kamuzu Stadium, an event that appears to have been the tipping point for the sponsor’s patience.

FDH Bank expressed “deep concern and disappointment” over the situation, warning that the dispute has not only disrupted the smooth running of the league but has also damaged the commercial value of its sponsorship and negatively impacted the bank’s brand image.

“This impasse has undermined the commercial viability of our partnerships,” the statement reads in part, signaling growing frustration from one of Malawian football’s biggest financial backers.

The bank further revealed that the suspension will remain in effect while it conducts a comprehensive review of its involvement in football. The review will assess whether continued sponsorship aligns with its corporate values, strategic goals, and expectations.

The move sends shockwaves across the football fraternity, with fears mounting over the immediate future of the FDH Bank Premiership. Clubs, players, and fans now face uncertainty, as the league heavily depends on FDH Bank’s financial support for operations, logistics, and prize structures.

Football analysts warn that if the standoff between SULOM and FAM is not resolved swiftly, the consequences could be severe — including delayed fixtures, financial strain on clubs, and potential reputational damage to Malawi’s football on the international stage.

For now, the ball is firmly in the court of football authorities. Whether they can resolve their differences and restore confidence among key stakeholders like FDH Bank will determine the fate of the country’s premier football competition.
