The Malawi Freedom Fighters Organization (MFF) has condemned plans by unidentified organisers to shut down the Karonga–Chiweta section of the M1 Road on 1st July 2026, describing the proposed action as counterproductive to the very development Malawians are demanding.M1 Rehabilitation Work Start This Month
A poster circulating on social media and attributed to the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) declares “NO ROAD REPAIRS. NO BUSINESS AS USUAL” and calls for an immediate commencement of construction works on the 45km stretch that has remained in poor condition for years.
“We feel the pain, but shutdown is not the answer”
MFF Secretary General Bonface Joseph says while the frustration over the state of the Karonga–Chiweta road is valid, closing the M1 – Malawi’s main north-south economic artery – will punish ordinary citizens more than it will pressure government.Concerned citizen reminds Mumba learn to say the truth
“If these reports are true, we advise the so-called organisers to reconsider this decision. Shutting down the M1 will hurt transport operators, maize and fish traders, patients seeking treatment, students, and businesses in Karonga, Chitipa and beyond,” Joseph said in a statement.
The Karonga–Chiweta stretch connects Malawi to Tanzania and is critical for cross-border trade, agriculture, and health services. A shutdown would disrupt supply chains and increase transport costs for communities already battling a high cost of living.
MFF proposes alternative pressure tactics
Instead of a shutdown, MFF is urging dialogue, peaceful petitions, and targeted engagement with Government, Parliament’s Transport Committee, and the Roads Authority.
“Roads are built through budgets, plans and pressure – but responsible pressure. We can demand accountability without shutting down hospitals, markets and schools,” Joseph added.
MFF reaffirmed its commitment to development and good governance, but stressed that economic sabotage or disruption of public order is not a solution.Karonga Boys thanks DPP for conducting “Thank you Rallies”
MFF appealed to Malawians to remain calm, patriotic and supportive of lawful, constructive ways of building a better Malawi.
