UK government's 'anti-corruption champion' quits, will oppose Johnson   LONDON – Britain’s ‘anti-corruption champion’, lawmaker John Penrose, resigned from his role in government on Monday saying he would vote against Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a confidence vote later in the day. “I’m sorry to have to resign as the PM’s Anti-Corruption Tsar but, after his reply last week about the Ministerial Code, it’s pretty clear he has broken it,” he said on Twitter. “That’s a resigning matter for me, and it should be for the PM too.”

Sir Graham Brady, who chairs the Tory committee that organises such votes, is expected to announce the move shortly. Speculation about a possible vote this week has been mounting, as Mr Johnson continues to face calls to resign over lockdown parties. A no-confidence vote will be triggered if 54 Tory MPs submit letters of no-confidence in him. Former minister Jesse Norman is the latest to confirm he has done this. In a letter to Mr Johnson posted on social media, Mr Norman, the MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire, said the PM had presided over "a culture of casual law-breaking" in No 10.  On Sunday the prime minister would not lose a confidence vote among his own MPs. In the 10 days since MPs returned to their constituencies for the half term break, speculation has sw...

Two more Tory MPs have revealed they have submitted letters of no confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Former health minister Steve Brine and Newton Abbot MP Anne Marie Morris join the six backbenchers who have publicly called on him to quit as party leader. The news comes in the wake of senior civil servant Sue Gray's inquiry into lockdown parties in Downing Street. The BBC is aware that about 20 Tory MPs have submitted letters - short of the 54 needed to force a vote on the PM. However, only Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbenchers, knows the exact number, which could be more. In a statement to constituents, Winchester MP Brine said he could no longer "defend the indefensible" as "rule makers cannot be rule breakers". On Friday, MP Paul H...

BY LUCY FARRELL, DAN BLOOM JOHNSON SAYS HE WILL FACE MPS TO ‘SET RECORD STRAIGHT’ AFTER BEING FINED OVER PARTYGATE Tomorrow will mark Prime Minister Boris Johnson's 1,000th day in downing street - the same day he will apologise to Parliament for breaking his own Covid laws. His backers praise him for being the Prime Minister who "got Brexit done". However, for his critics, the irony that he is spending the anniversary acknowledging his failing is not lost on them. When Johnson came into office on 24 July 2019, he promised to "restore trust" in democracy and "unify" Britain by "working flat out" to lead the country. Since then we have seen disputes regarding donors, MP behaviour, and of course, Partygate. There have also been countless contentious policies from axing f...
