Malawians have to dig deeper into their pockets to manage a packet of sugar as the product's local manufacturer Illovo has adjusted prices upwards. The last time prices of the product were adjusted upwards was in May this year. Consumers will now have to part ways with K1500 to purchase a 1KG packet of brown sugar and K1660 for a 1KG of white sugar. According to a statement from the public listed company the decision is to deter illegal exports into neighbouring countries and ensure sustained availability of the product. Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc has donated 150 million kwacha to Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) towards the university's Endowment Fund. Speaking during the official presentation of the donation at the university today Illovo Human Resources Director Khumbo Banda said the company decided to donate the money due to the sustainability of the strategy, in which the principal is continually preserved and only a proportion of the yield is spent. Illovo sugar Malawi has assured Malawians that it has started oversupplying the market in order to ensure that enough sugar is available on the market. Illovo sugar Malawi Managing Director Lekani Katandula said this on the sidelines of a visit by the minister of trade and Industry. Katandula said the company is now able to supply over 660 tones of sugar which is above normal supply. He said this will reduce demand on the market which will in turn restrain the increase of the price of the commodity. He has since disclosed that on Friday the company has managed to supply 700 metric tonnes of sugar on the local market. The minister of trade and Industry is visiting the Illovo sugar factory to appreciate what the company is doing in the wake of the scarcity of sugar.

A spot check in Lilongwe has indicated that major retail shops have run out of sugar.
