Four Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons to appear in court for bail

Bail application ruling for four officials of Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons Limited as well as two clearing agents is expected to be delivered this afternoon in Blantyre.

Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Balaka will deliver his ruling from 3 o’clock.

The Malawi Revenue Authority-MRA arrested the suspects on Tuesday and Wednesday this week over customs related charges.

The arrested six are Faizal Gaffar Latif, Zarina Latif, Mohamed Yaseen and Mohamed Gaffar who are senior officials from Mapeto while Chimwemwe Tembo and Mcknight Banda are the two clearing agents.

According to the MRA, the suspects are alleged to have connived to defraud the government of about 252.6 million kwacha in tax revenue.

This is however a different case from another matter which is also in court pending High Court Judicial review where some officials from Mapeto are answering charges of tax evasion.
