A section of long-time Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters has expressed concern over what they describe as the growing sidelining of individuals who actively fought for the party during the years of political struggle.
In a strongly worded reflection shared this week, one of the group’s vocal contributors, Comrade Jumbe, said many loyal members who risked their safety to oppose the former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration feel ignored despite their contribution to the party’s recent political success.
Supporters Cite Sacrifice and Silence
According to Jumbe, a significant number of patriotic citizens worked tirelessly—often behind the scenes—to defend democratic values and challenge what they viewed as oppressive governance. He said these individuals endured intimidation, threats, and sleepless nights while contributing to the DPP’s resurgence.
“We fought because we love this country. We fought because Malawi deserved better leadership,” he said.
“But after the victory, many of us who carried the struggle on our shoulders have not even received a simple word of thanks.”
Jumbe noted that several notable figures, including Kamlepo Kalua and Comrade Ntanyiwa, are among those he describes as “phantom fighters” whose efforts have gone unacknowledged.
Concerns Over ‘Opportunists’ in Power
The statement further alleges that individuals who “played no role” during the political struggle now occupy influential positions in government.
Jumbe argued that these figures remained neutral throughout the heightened political tensions, yet currently hold some of the most powerful offices close to the President.
“They never wrote or spoke even one word against injustice during the MCP regime,” he said.
“Remaining neutral in times of oppression is equal to supporting the oppressor.”
He added that some of these individuals “mastered the art of pretending” and are allegedly influencing decisions while sidelining genuine contributors.
Supporters Clarify Their Demands
Jumbe stressed that the group is not seeking jobs, appointments, or financial benefits. Instead, they are calling for recognition and appreciation for those who stood firmly with the party during difficult times.
“All we are asking for is a simple thank you,” he said.
“It costs nothing, but refusing to say it costs everything.”
The statement also issued a reminder that political parties risk losing their foundation when they sideline their grassroots fighters.
Warning Against Ignoring Loyal Supporters
Jumbe said forgetting those who fought for the party is not only demoralizing but also dangerous for the party’s long-term stability.
Quoting a popular proverb, he said:
“Do not throw away the ladder that lifted you up—you may need it again.”
He hinted that he may soon reveal the names of individuals he believes misled the President and earned positions through “lies and opportunism.”
A Call for Reflection Within the Party
Despite the frustrations expressed, Jumbe noted that supporters still believe in President Peter Mutharika’s leadership and remain hopeful that the concerns raised will be addressed.
“We have a listening President, and we respect him. But true change cannot come if genuine voices are silenced,” he said.
The statement concludes by reaffirming that their fight was never about titles or positions, but about protecting Malawi’s democratic values.
