President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and the First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera on behalf of the people of Malawi have expressed their deepest condolences to the British Royal Family and the people and Government of Great Britain on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Her Majesty the Queen was also Queen of Malawi between 1964 and 1966 as Malawi was transitioning into a Republic.
Dr Chakwera said together with the First Lady, they have fond memories of the Queen’s visit to Malawi in July 1979, during which she captivated the imagination of Malawians and demonstrated the same solidarity with Malawi’s quest for social economic liberation as she had done with the political independence.
In a statement, the President says her legacy as a friend of Malawi, will forever be etched on our hearts and indelibly marked on the pages of our history, a history she positively shaped in more ways than we can put into words.
The First Couple has since joined other leaders across the globe in mourning her passing and appreciating the life of generosity to mankind, devotion to duty, service to country, dedication to family, and faith in God that she so humbly and ably embodied.
The Malawi leader and Madam Chakwera say their thoughts and prayers are with the royal family during this difficult time.
