Chakwera leads Malawians in remembering war veterans

Lilongwe, November 13: President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Sunday led the nation in Remembrance Day commemoration at the National War Memorial Tower in Lilongwe.

Also present at the event was Vice President, Dr Saulos Chilima, Cabinet Ministers, Chief Justice, Speaker of the National Assembly, envoys, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Chiefs and others.

Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 or Sunday closest to November 11 at 11 am as this was the time the First World War officially ended after the Germans called for suspension of fighting in order to secure a peace settlement.

President Chakwera laid the wreath at the memorial tower followed by the Vice President, Chilima.

Others who laid wreaths includes Malawi Defence Force Commander, General Vincent Nundwe, Inspector General of Police, Merlyne Yolamu, Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara, Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda, Representative of Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Nicholas Dausi, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba, a War Veteran, Serving Soldier, Mayor of Lilongwe City Council and Members of the Diplomatic Corp.

After lying of wreaths, members of the clergy took time in praying for the souls of soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the wars.

Director of Ceremony, Major Emmanuel Kelvin Mlelemba said the Remembrance Day is the Memorial Day observed in Commonwealth member states to remember those who lost their lives during the two World Wars of 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945.

He said, the Remembrance Day was designed to remember all the contributions that the departed as well as ex-service soldiers made in all the country’s major operations and different operations outside the country such as Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In Mzuzu, the President was represented by Minister of Youth and Sports, Richard Chimwendo Banda and in Zomba by Minister of Mining, Dr. Albert Mbawala.
