FDH Bank has strengthened its role in Malawi’s development agenda after partnering with the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) and FDH Properties Limited in an ambitious plan to deliver 10,000 housing units within one year under Project 250.
The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Lilongwe, positions FDH Bank as a key financing partner in efforts to expand access to housing for Malawians across different income groups.
Through structured financing, FDH Bank aims to support the delivery of housing for high-, middle- and low-income earners, with particular emphasis on affordable homes.
The initiative comes as Malawi faces a housing deficit estimated at more than 1.5 million units, making investment in housing finance and construction an important national priority.
Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu welcomed the agreement, describing it as a significant milestone in housing investment and reaffirming government’s commitment to partnerships that promote safe and affordable homes.
MHC Chief Executive Officer Bob Chimkango stressed that the project’s success would depend not only on the number of houses constructed but also on affordability, efficiency and meeting the needs of ordinary Malawians.
By bringing together banking, property development and public housing expertise, FDH Bank and its partners are seeking to turn the housing challenge into an opportunity for investment and improved living conditions.
The initiative also supports Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development vision, which recognises the importance of infrastructure and private-sector participation in economic transformation.
With the target set at 10,000 homes within 12 months, attention will now turn to implementation, including construction sites, financing arrangements, prices and commencement dates.
For FDH Bank, the partnership highlights the potential of financial institutions to contribute beyond traditional banking by supporting projects that address major national development needs.
