Political commentator Onjezerani Kenani has challenged the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to brace itself for criticism and political consequences, saying the party is now beginning to reap what it sowed during its time in government.

Kenani said he was surprised that MCP figures Jessie Kabwila and Moses Kunkuyu were complaining about the recent incidents in Blantyre, arguing that what happened was relatively minor compared to incidents that occurred during MCP’s time in power.

He cited the Mbowe Filling Station incident and the alleged harassment of civil servants and Namiwa as examples of what he considers more serious experiences that happened under the previous administration.

According to Kenani, politicians should understand that actions taken while in government can have consequences long after they leave power.

He argued that political leaders must be prepared to face the same treatment they may have subjected others to when they held positions of authority.

“Politicians must understand that the seeds they sow while in government are the same ones they will reap when they leave power,” Kenani said.

His remarks have added to the growing political debate over accountability, political intolerance and the treatment of political opponents in Malawi.

However, the wider concern remains whether Malawi’s political leaders are willing to break the cycle of retaliation and ensure that the rights and dignity of every citizen are protected, regardless of which party is in power.
