A grouping under the banner, Concerned Citizens has given Parliament a seven-day ultimatum to summon Inspector General of Police, Merlyne Yolamu for the alleged failure of the police to move the wheels of justice on the death of a Malawian of Rwandan origin Emmilie Halimana Noel on 17th October 2022.
They gave the ultimatum after delivering their petition to the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe Wednesday morning following their peaceful protests from the Kamuzu Central Hospital round-about.
Leader of the protesters, Wells Khama claims their engagements with police authorities to arrest suspects behind Noel’s controversial death have yielded no positive results.
“If seven days end without action, we will be holding vigils here,” warns Khama.
Deputy Chairperson of the Defense and Security Committee of Parliament, who is also Zomba Central legislator, Bester Awali received the petition and promised to present it to the Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara.
National Police spokesperson, Peter Kalaya has repeatedly indicated they are investigating the matter professionally and rubbished claims the police leadership is shielding some implicated police officers on the matter.
There are two contradictory post-mortem reports to Noel’s death with one pointing to the road accident while the other, murder.
Two weeks ago, a local governance institution, Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives-CDEDI wrote the Malawi Human Rights Commission to consider calling for an urgent public hearing to deliver justice on what it described as mysterious deaths.
