Mzimba Shebeen Owner Arrested for Brutal Attack on Customer

BY DRAXON MALOYA

Police in Jenda, Mzimba, have arrested 42-year-old Darison Jonazi, owner of a local Shebeen, for chopping off six toes of customer Molala Simwaka, 29, during a violent assault.

The incident occurred on September 14, 2024, when Simwaka and his friends, Mavuto, 26, and Roshin Simwaka, 27, visited Jonazi’s Shebeen around midnight.

According to Jenda police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector MacFarlane Mseteka, Jonazi mistakenly believed the trio was attempting to rob him and began beating them.

Simwaka fell and was severely beaten before Jonazi cut off five toes from his left foot and one from his right foot.

“Realized the crime committed, Jonazi took Simwaka to Embangweni Mission Hospital, where he was later transferred to Mzimba District Hospital and admitted until September 21,” said Mseteka adding, “following community complaints, police arrested Jonazi on September 24, 2024, and charged him with grievous harm.”

Meanwhile, Jenda police is reminding the public to report incidents promptly and warned against taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that mob justice will not be tolerated.

This disturbing incident echoes other violent crimes reported in Mzimba, such as the arrest of a businessman for selling fake cooking oil and a grandson’s arrest for murdering his grandfather.
