As Malawi heads toward the 2025 elections, concerns are surfacing about the conduct of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and its alleged plans to manipulate the upcoming polls. The MCP, a dominant force within the Tonse Alliance, has reportedly been laying the groundwork for an election rigging scheme since its partnership within the coalition began. This has raised alarms, particularly now that some key alliance members have distanced themselves from the ruling party.

When the Tonse Alliance was first formed, it was seen as a unifying force meant to bring together various political parties for the common good of Malawi. The promise of restoring democracy, accountability, and economic stability brought hope to millions of Malawians. However, as we approach 2025, cracks within the alliance have become increasingly visible. Some partners, disillusioned by the MCP’s maneuvers, have abandoned the ship, shedding light on a scheme that was allegedly in motion long before these rifts appeared.
The most troubling aspect of this development is that those who were once in close proximity to the inner workings of the MCP now have insights into the party’s alleged plans for the next election. According to these former partners, the MCP had been plotting ways to secure victory at the polls, even if it meant subverting the democratic process. The rigging scheme, as alleged, involves a variety of tactics designed to tilt the electoral playing field in favor of the MCP, undermining the will of the people.
These accusations are not entirely surprising. Throughout its history, the MCP has been no stranger to controversy, and there are lingering memories of its authoritarian rule in the 1980s and 90s. While the party has attempted to rebrand itself as a champion of democracy, the recent revelations have reignited suspicions about its true intentions.
It appears that the departure of key partners from the Tonse Alliance has exposed a rift rooted in mistrust and fear of electoral manipulation. These former allies now claim that the MCP, while publicly presenting itself as committed to democratic principles, has been working behind the scenes to ensure that it remains in power by any means necessary. The disintegration of the alliance has given these ex-partners the confidence to speak out about the alleged plot.
The allegations raise serious concerns about the state of democracy in Malawi. If these claims are true, the 2025 elections could be marred by irregularities, and the MCP’s grip on power could be solidified through dishonest means. This would be a betrayal of the very principles upon which the Tonse Alliance was founded—a coalition that once promised to bring genuine reform to the country.
The growing distrust between political parties within the alliance also reflects a deeper problem in Malawian politics. Coalitions formed for convenience, rather than genuine partnership, are prone to collapse when personal interests begin to take precedence over national unity. This is precisely what we are witnessing with the Tonse Alliance, as its once-strong foundation crumbles under the weight of internal discord and allegations of electoral malpractice.
As we move closer to the 2025 elections, Malawians must remain vigilant. The future of democracy in the country is at stake, and any attempts to undermine the electoral process must be called out and challenged. For the MCP, the time has come to prove whether it is truly committed to upholding democratic values or whether it will resort to its old, authoritarian tendencies to remain in power.
The disintegration of the Tonse Alliance and the emerging accusations surrounding the MCP’s plans for the 2025 elections signal a pivotal moment in Malawi’s political landscape. It remains to be seen how these revelations will impact the upcoming elections, but one thing is certain: the eyes of the nation will be closely watching as the political drama unfolds.
