The UTM Party has announced plans to meet with Vice President Michael Usi to seek clarification regarding his recent remarks in Mwanza, where he stated, “Boma ndi lomweli” (the government remains the same).
Dr. Usi made the statement while encouraging citizens to register for the voter roll, a remark that has sparked mixed reactions. Some interpreted it as an endorsement of President Lazarus Chakwera, who is also the leader of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), raising concerns about Usi’s allegiance within the UTM Party.
UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala emphasized that the party takes such matters seriously and intends to ensure that all its members remain committed to its principles and policies.
“The UTM Party does not condone situations where a member supports or aligns with another political party while claiming allegiance to UTM. Once arrangements for the meeting with Dr. Usi are finalized, we will communicate the outcomes to the public,” Njawala said.
Dr. Usi, a longstanding member of UTM, currently serves as both Vice President of the Republic of Malawi and interim leader of the UTM following the passing of Saulos Chilima.
Njawala’s statement reflects the party’s stance on maintaining unity and loyalty among its members, particularly as the country gears up for the 2025 general elections. UTM has reiterated its commitment to its own political agenda, and any actions perceived as favoring another party are taken seriously.
This development highlights the ongoing tensions within political alliances, particularly between UTM and its partner MCP in the Tonse Alliance. As UTM seeks clarification from one of its senior members, the outcome of this meeting could have significant implications for the party’s cohesion and future strategies.
