Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika: A call to action for the future of Malawi

By Burnett Munthali

As we approach the pivotal elections of 2025, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, former President of Malawi, has taken to his social media to remind all eligible citizens of the tremendous power they hold in shaping the future of our beloved nation. In a heartfelt message on his Facebook page, Mutharika emphasized the promise of 2025, describing it as a year filled with potential for positive change and progress.

“The year 2025 holds a great promise for our future as we go to a watershed election,” Mutharika wrote, underscoring the significance of this upcoming electoral process. “The power to shape the future of our nation rests in our vote.”

In his post, Mutharika passionately called on all Malawians to recognize their civic duty to vote. The message was clear: our vote is not just a right but a responsibility. It is the most effective way for citizens to ensure that their voices are heard and their aspirations are represented in the corridors of power. It is through the ballot that we, the people, can elect leaders who will steer the nation toward a brighter and more prosperous future.

In his call to action, Mutharika encouraged Malawians to register to vote and to participate fully in the democratic process. “Get registered and let your voice be heard,” he urged, emphasizing the importance of active participation in shaping the political landscape of Malawi.

Looking ahead to the new year, Mutharika also shared exciting plans for his leadership role within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). On Thursday, 2nd January 2025, Mutharika will lead the DPP on whistle-stop tours across the districts of Mulanje and Phalombe. The DPP, under Mutharika’s leadership, aims to reconnect with the grassroots and remind the people of the party’s proven track record in advancing Malawi’s interests.

Communities in Chonde, Chinakanaka, Chitakale, Likulezi, Phalombe, Migowi, Miseu 4, and Chiradzulu are set to receive Mutharika’s message of hope and a call for a #ReturnToProvenLeadership. These tours are not just a campaign for votes but a reaffirmation of the Democratic Progressive Party’s commitment to the people, ensuring that leadership remains accountable to the aspirations of the citizens.

As we move closer to the 2025 elections, Mutharika’s message serves as a crucial reminder of the power of democracy and the responsibility that comes with it. The future of Malawi lies in the hands of its people, and it is through our collective decision at the ballot box that we can build a future of unity, prosperity, and progress.

So, as we prepare for the election, let us heed Mutharika’s call: get registered, get involved, and let your voice be heard. The future of Malawi is in our hands, and together, we can shape it for the better.
