3 Arrested For Diverting Green Belt Funds

Police in Karonga have arrested three people suspected of diverting Green Belt Initiative funds amounting to K6 million to a personal account.

Karonga Police Publicist, George Mulewa, says one of the suspects works at the district council and the other two are business people.

“One of the suspects is Robert Phiri who works at the district council and is suspected of transacting the amount of K6 million to a businesswoman Mrs Beniza Simbeye on 8 April 2022,” Mulewa explained.

Mulewa said the third suspect is identified as Alinafe Malinga who played a role of a middleman.

The money according to Mulewa was meant for compensating the affected households, in relation to the Green Belt Initiative project in the district.
