High Court Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda has ordered for consolidation of an application to set aside the prohibition of Human Rights Ambassadors-HRA protests with another application for an injunction stopping demos for the same organization on July 20 2022.
Last Friday, Kingsley Mpaso, Redson Munlo and HRA made an application to the court to set aside the Lilongwe District Commissioner’s decision stopping their planned demonstrations this Wednesday.
But in a court notice we have seen, Nyirenda says the application is very much similar with case number 2017 of 2022 between John Kwenda and others versus Kingsley Mpaso, Ida Mazinga, Ben Longwe and other unknown people.
In July this year, Kwenda and others obtained a court injunction at the eleventh hour stopping the demonstrations by Mpaso and others.
Nyirenda has since ordered the consolidation of the cases so that they are heard together before Justice Simeon Mdeza; essentially casting doubts on the future of the Wednesday demos.
Lawyer for Mpaso and others, Oscar Taulo says they are yet to get communication on when the court will deal with the consolidated matter.
In the challenged prohibition, Lilongwe DC Dr. Lawford Palani called for the postponement of the Wednesday demonstrations; saying police officers would be busy manning filling stations, among others.
