Popular Malawian musician Dan Lufani, better known as Dan Lu, has publicly pleaded for God’s forgiveness over his controversial 2022 song “Tulani Pansi.” In the song, Lufani called for President Lazarus Chakwera’s resignation, citing unfulfilled campaign promises, a move that sparked widespread debate and criticism.

During a recent interview, Dan Lu reflected on the impact of the song and expressed deep regret for his actions. “At the time, I felt compelled to speak out about what many were feeling, but I realize now that my words may have crossed a line,” he admitted. “I am seeking God’s forgiveness for what I said in the song and hope to move forward with a better understanding of how to use my platform.”

“Tulani Pansi,” which translates to “Step Down,” gained significant attention when it was released, as it voiced the frustrations of Malawians who were disillusioned by unmet expectations from the government. Dan Lu’s call for the president to step down, however, was seen by some as inflammatory, and it sparked political discussions and criticism from supporters of the administration.

In his public plea, Dan Lu did not withdraw his concern for the country’s state but acknowledged that he may have chosen the wrong way to express his dissatisfaction. “I still love Malawi and want the best for my country, but I now understand the importance of addressing these matters with respect and in line with God’s teachings,” he added.

Lufani’s decision to seek forgiveness has drawn mixed reactions, with some praising him for his humility, while others feel he should not apologize for speaking his mind. Despite the controversy, Dan Lu remains one of Malawi’s most influential artists, and his plea signals a desire to reconcile with both his faith and his audience.
