Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences’ (MUBAS) School of Engineering Executive Dean, Burnet O’Brien Mkandawire, has urged students across the country’s educational institutions to focus on achieving excellence rather than merely pursuing success.
Mkandawire, who was the guest of honour at Central High International School’s (CHIS) annual prize-giving ceremony in Blantyre, emphasized that excellence stems from inner satisfaction and quality in one’s work, while success is often superficial and fame-driven.
“What every student should know is that excellence is an inward thing that brings you satisfaction when you have quality in what you do,” he told students. “On the contrary, success is external and superficial as it seeks to give you fame. Yet, when you have excellence, fame comes automatically. You get quality and enduring results in whatever you do.”
The CHIS prize-giving ceremony celebrated top achievers from the 2023-2024 academic year, recognizing accomplishments in the End of Year Examinations, Cambridge Checkpoint, Cambridge IGCSE, AS & A-Levels, and Pearson BTEC A-Level assessments.
One of CHIS’s directors, Salim Karim, highlighted that 100 learners were honoured during the ceremony, with 58 percent of the awardees being girls. Karim expressed pride in the school’s achievements and reiterated the institution’s commitment to fostering academic excellence.
The event brought together parents, teachers, and students, all united in celebrating the remarkable academic achievements of the learners.
