Lilongwe’s enthralling phantom aviation air show ignites young dreams

By Burnett Munthali

Today, the Lilongwe Air Force Base buzzed with excitement as hundreds of people, from young children to seasoned aviation enthusiasts, gathered to witness the thrilling Phantom Aviation Air Show. The event showcased a stunning array of aircraft, aerial maneuvers, and hands-on demonstrations, giving attendees an up-close look at the world of aviation.

The highlight of the day was the presence of seven-year-old Ropafadzo Nakhove, a bright-eyed girl with a deep curiosity for aircraft. She caught everyone’s attention as she declared her ambition to become an aircraft engineer. Inspired by the day’s events, Ropafadzo took on the role of an “assistant engineer” for a few moments, enthusiastically helping a crew member with a mock inspection of a Helicopter Gazelle SA 341 1370. Her excitement and curiosity captivated onlookers, showing just how inspiring this event was for the younger generation.

Attendees enjoyed a series of breathtaking aerial acrobatics, with skilled pilots performing barrel rolls, low passes, and other daring maneuvers that left the crowd in awe. The Phantom Aviation team also facilitated guided tours of various aircraft, allowing visitors to step inside helicopters, jets, and training aircraft. For many, it was their first time experiencing aviation up close, and the airshow delivered an unforgettable experience.

The show did more than entertain; it highlighted the potential of aviation as a career path for Malawi’s youth. Children like Ropafadzo, who may have previously seen aircraft only as distant objects in the sky, were able to touch, explore, and learn about aviation first-hand. Her enthusiasm, echoed by many other young attendees, reflects a budding interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, promising a new generation of Malawians who could someday lead in the fields of aerospace and engineering.

The Phantom Aviation Air Show proved to be more than just an event; it was a platform of inspiration, showing the exciting possibilities of aviation to Malawians young and old. As the day ended, one could only imagine how many dreams of flight were born among the children in the crowd. The airshow, with its thrilling displays and hands-on experiences, left an indelible mark on all who attended, particularly the young dreamers like Ropafadzo, who left with eyes set on the skies and aspirations of engineering in their hearts.
