Nkhotakota Central Member of Parliament Ayuba James has fired back at critics within the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), declaring that he will not leave the party and insisting that it does not belong to any individual or family.

James, who is also an MCP member, made the remarks in a strongly worded statement posted on Facebook, challenging those he believes are acting as though the party is their personal property.

He described as ignorance the belief that MCP was founded by the parents of certain individuals, arguing that the party’s history does not give anyone exclusive ownership over it.

“We are not going to lose anything at all, but we cannot abandon the party because it does not belong to your parents. It is sheer ignorance to think that this party was founded by your parents. Read the history of this country if you understand English,” James wrote.

Ayuba James Says MCP Does Not Belong to Any Family

The Nkhotakota Central legislator went further by arguing that MCP was founded by people from Malawi’s Northern Region, insisting that the party does not belong exclusively to those who currently claim authority over it.

“This party was founded by people from the North. It does not belong to you either. You simply hijacked it, you greedy people. Even if you tell us to start our own party or join another one, you are wasting your time. We are not going anywhere,” he added.

His remarks were a firm rejection of suggestions that he and other members should abandon MCP or establish a separate political movement.

Although James did not identify the individuals he was addressing in the quoted statement, his message was clear: he intends to remain in the party despite the disagreements behind his remarks.

MCP Faces Questions Over Party Unity

James’s statement comes amid wider public debate about leadership, loyalty and internal disagreements within MCP.

His comments highlight a fundamental question about political party membership: who has the authority to determine whether other members should remain in an organisation?

By insisting that MCP does not belong to any individual or family, James has challenged the idea that certain people should have the final say over who belongs in the party.

However, the legislator’s claims about the party’s founding and the people responsible for its establishment remain his own assertions in the statement.

For now, James has made his position unequivocal. He is not prepared to leave MCP simply because others may want him to go.

His closing message leaves little room for interpretation: “We are not going anywhere.”
