Police in Dowa have arrested Malita Kalirani, aged 66, for the alleged murder of her 82-year-old mother, Nadimba Kalirani.
The incident occurred on January 8, 2025, at approximately 22:00 hours in Lavu Village.
According to Village Headman Lavu, Malita had been living with her mother.
On the day of the incident, Malita reportedly went out to a drinking spree and consumed kachasu.
Upon returning home in an intoxicated state, she allegedly assaulted her mother with a hammer and a heavy piece of metal.
Neighbors, alerted by Nadimba’s cries, rushed to the scene, Nadimba identified Malita as her attacker before succumbing to her injuries.
The matter was reported to Mvera Police Post, and officers who visited the scene recovered the weapons used in the assault.
The deceased was taken to Dowa District Hospital for a postmortem examination, which confirmed that the cause of death was head and internal chest injuries resulting from the assault.
Malita Kalirani, who hails from Lavu Village, Traditional Authority Chiwere, Dowa District, is expected to appear in court soon to face a murder charge once the necessary paperwork is completed.
