Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo became one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable businessmen, building a public profile around major infrastructure projects, philanthropy, football, political connections and an extravagant display of wealth.
Known widely as “Sir Wicknell,” Chivayo’s life was a remarkable combination of business success, controversy, legal battles, political relationships and highly publicised generosity.
His life came to an abrupt end on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, when the helicopter carrying him crashed at Kudenga Farm in the Marondera area of Zimbabwe at approximately 5:00–5:30 PM local time. Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and other occupants died in the crash. The exact cause remains under investigation.
Early Life and Difficult Beginnings
Chivayo’s journey to wealth was far from conventional.
He was born in Zimbabwe and later became known for describing his childhood as one of limited financial privilege. His rise from those circumstances to becoming a wealthy businessman formed a central part of the personal story he told about himself.
But his early adult life also included a major legal setback.
In 2004, when he was 24, Chivayo was convicted of fraud and sentenced to prison. He served time at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison before later rebuilding his life and business career.
The conviction became an enduring part of his public history, although it did not prevent him from eventually becoming one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent businessmen. Recent biographical reporting notes that the conviction involved a financial transaction and that he served his sentence before emerging to rebuild his career.
The Rise of Intratrek
The biggest turning point in Chivayo’s business career came through Intratrek Zimbabwe.
In 2015, Intratrek was awarded a contract worth approximately US$172–173 million to develop the 100-megawatt Gwanda Solar Project for the Zimbabwe Power Company.
The project was intended to contribute significantly to Zimbabwe’s electricity generation capacity.
Instead, it became one of the longest-running controversies associated with Chivayo.
Questions surrounding payments, implementation and the progress of the project resulted in legal disputes and criminal allegations.
Chivayo and Intratrek contested the allegations, and courts subsequently delivered decisions that significantly affected the government’s attempts to terminate or escape the project agreement.
The Gwanda project ultimately became inseparable from Chivayo’s public identity: it demonstrated the scale of the contracts available to his companies while also placing him at the centre of years of legal and political controversy.
From Businessman to Celebrity
Chivayo did something unusual for a businessman of his wealth: he made his private life part of his public brand.
Through social media, he regularly displayed luxury vehicles, expensive watches, private aviation, designer clothing and large amounts of cash.
He also gave away expensive cars and large sums of money.
Musicians, football personalities, religious figures, media personalities and ordinary members of the public became recipients of his generosity.
The result was the creation of a distinctive public persona.
Chivayo was no longer simply an energy businessman.
He became a celebrity businessman whose wealth was itself part of his brand.
Philanthropy and Extraordinary Gifts
Chivayo repeatedly presented his wealth as a means of helping other people.
His charitable activities included financial assistance, vehicles, support for sports organisations and gifts to public institutions.
In December 2025, he announced a donation of US$2 million and 20 Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles to welfare funds associated with Zimbabwe’s security services.
His supporters regarded such gestures as evidence of generosity and patriotism.
Critics, however, questioned the relationship between such enormous private gifts and Chivayo’s close connections with political and government circles.
Those competing interpretations became a recurring feature of his public life.
His Political Connections
Chivayo maintained highly visible relationships with senior political figures in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in Africa.
His relationship with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa attracted particular attention.
Photographs and videos of Chivayo with political leaders regularly appeared on social media, reinforcing his image as a businessman with extraordinary access to political power.
Chivayo maintained that his relationships with political leaders did not mean he had purchased influence.
Nevertheless, his proximity to political power became one of the principal reasons his business activities received public scrutiny.
Election Controversies
Chivayo’s name also became associated with controversy surrounding Zimbabwe’s elections.
Questions were raised over transactions involving companies linked to election-related procurement, while allegations also emerged concerning political financing and influence.
Chivayo denied wrongdoing and disputed allegations made against him.
The controversy nevertheless demonstrated the difficulty of separating his business activities from his political relationships.
Zimbabwean Football
Football became another important part of Chivayo’s public profile.
He provided financial assistance to football personalities and organisations and became particularly prominent during the Zimbabwe Football Association leadership contest.
He supported Nqobile Magwizi and publicly discussed substantial financial commitments to Zimbabwean football.
His involvement generated controversy among opponents who questioned whether his financial support could influence football administration.
Chivayo maintained that his involvement was motivated by his desire to help Zimbabwean football.
The episode reinforced a defining feature of his public life: his enormous financial capacity allowed him to become an influential participant in areas traditionally dominated by institutions rather than individual businessmen.
Luxury Cars and Cash
Perhaps nothing better captured Chivayo’s public image than his gifts.
He became known for giving away luxury vehicles and large amounts of cash, frequently announcing the gifts through social media.
On the day of his death, Chivayo had reportedly posted photographs of two luxury vehicles he said he was giving to his lawyers, together with US$750,000 in cash.
The timing made the post particularly striking.
Hours later, he was dead.
His Final Journey
On 30 September 2026, Chivayo travelled by helicopter from the Gandami area in Chikomba towards Harare.
The aircraft crashed in the Marondera area at approximately 5:00–5:30 PM Zimbabwe time.
Initial reports differed over the number of people aboard the helicopter. Zimbabwean authorities initially reported different figures, but police subsequently identified those aboard and confirmed Chivayo and Lucy Muteke among the victims.
The crash caused a fire after fuel spilled on impact.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe said preliminary observations showed that the aircraft struck the ground, spilling fuel that subsequently ignited.
Investigators recovered the aircraft’s black box as authorities began working to establish what caused the crash.
The cause of the accident had not been established as of 2 October 2026.
Death at 45
Chivayo’s age has been reported inconsistently by different media organisations.
A recent biographical account gives his date of birth as 22 November 1980, which would make him 45 years old at the time of his death. Other outlets have reported different ages.
That discrepancy should therefore be treated carefully until an authoritative biographical record is available.
A Complicated Legacy
Wicknell Chivayo leaves behind a legacy that cannot easily be reduced to either admiration or criticism.
He was a businessman who became associated with major energy and infrastructure contracts.
He was a former convicted fraud offender whose later career saw him become extraordinarily wealthy.
He was a philanthropist who distributed millions of dollars in cash, vehicles and other forms of assistance.
He was a major figure in Zimbabwean football.
He maintained relationships with presidents and other senior political figures.
And he became a social-media celebrity whose extravagant lifestyle made him one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable wealthy personalities.
His supporters will remember his generosity, business achievements and support for sport and individuals.
Critics will remember the controversies surrounding government contracts, political proximity and questions about the influence of private wealth.
Both dimensions are part of the public record.
The Final Chapter
Chivayo’s death came at a moment when his business career was still developing.
His companies remained involved in energy projects, while his public profile continued to expand across Zimbabwe and beyond.
Instead of another business announcement, however, the final news about him was a helicopter crash.
Date of death: 30 September 2026
Approximate time of crash: 5:00–5:30 PM Zimbabwe time
Location: Kudenga Farm, Marondera, Zimbabwe
Cause: Under investigation
Age: Reported as 45 by some biographical sources; other reports differ
The man who built his public identity around showing the world his wealth left behind a story that will continue to be debated.
Wicknell Chivayo’s life was a story of extraordinary financial rise, major business contracts, philanthropy, political access, controversy and conspicuous wealth.
His final chapter was written not in a boardroom, football stadium or political gathering, but in the aftermath of a helicopter crash in rural Zimbabwe.
His business empire, charitable commitments, political relationships and unresolved controversies now form part of the historical record of one of Zimbabwe’s most visible businessmen of his generation.
