Electricity Tariff Hiked by 16% Effective February 1, 2025

The Malawi government has announced a 16% increase in electricity tariffs, effective February 1, 2025.

This adjustment is the second phase of a four-year base tariff approved by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) ¹.

According to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), this tariff revision aims to enhance service delivery, demonstrating the corporation’s commitment to its customers.

The increased revenue will likely be used to upgrade infrastructure, maintain existing facilities, and ensure a stable power supply.

This development comes amid global energy market fluctuations, which have led to adjustments in electricity prices worldwide.

Considering global energy marketing trends, the UK’s energy price cap is set to increase by 1.2% from January to March 2025 . In contrast, Sri Lanka’s electricity tariffs were reduced by 21.9% in March 2024.

The impact of this tariff hike on Malawian consumers remains to be seen as several commentators says, it is essential for ESCOM to ensure that the increased revenue is utilized efficiently to improve the overall quality of service.
