Former Malawi President Peter Mutharika appears to be on the verge of making a historic political comeback, according to a new opinion poll.
The poll, which surveyed nearly 40,000 Malawians, suggests that Mutharika could reclaim the presidency without relying on a political alliance.
If these numbers reflect the actual voting patterns, they indicate a significant shift in public sentiment, with many Malawians expressing a renewed preference for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader.
At the same time, the results reveal a growing dissatisfaction with the leadership of incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera.
For an entire week, Malawi24 conducted an open online poll across its Facebook and Twitter platforms, inviting Malawians to indicate their preferred candidate for the September elections.
The poll attracted over 38,000 responses, offering a glimpse into the political mood of the electorate.
Mutharika emerged as the overwhelming favorite, securing 62% of the votes, while President Chakwera trailed far behind with only 10%.
The significant gap between the two candidates suggests that the DPP leader has maintained a strong political following, despite being out of office since 2020.
These findings also reflect a possible backlash against the current administration, which has faced criticism over economic challenges, governance concerns, and unmet campaign promises.
As the country inches closer to the elections, the poll results raise critical questions about the potential direction of Malawi’s leadership.
If this trend continues, Mutharika’s return to State House could become a reality, marking a dramatic political shift in the country.
