Muslims in Lilongwe today gathered to celebrate Ziyara, an annual occasion marked by worship, spiritual reflection, fellowship and the strengthening of bonds among members of the Muslim community.
The gathering, organised under the auspices of the Lilongwe Sunni Foundation, carried a broader message of peace, unity, compassion and peaceful coexistence among Malawians of different religious backgrounds.
Speaking during the event, Foundation Chairperson Aamir Patel said Ziyara should not be viewed solely as a Muslim celebration, but also as an opportunity to promote harmony and strengthen relationships between people from different faith communities.
Patel emphasised that Malawi’s strength lies in its diversity, urging citizens to continue embracing one another regardless of religious affiliation.
“Ziyara is not only about coming together as Muslims. It is also an opportunity to promote peace, unity and understanding among all Malawians,” Patel said.
He encouraged Muslims and other citizens to make compassion and care for others an important part of their daily lives, particularly by supporting people facing hardship and those who are most vulnerable in society.
The message comes at a time when communities across Malawi continue to face social and economic challenges, making calls for solidarity, kindness and mutual support increasingly important.
A Celebration Beyond Religion
Ziyara provides an opportunity for Muslims to come together in prayer and spiritual reflection while reinforcing the bonds of brotherhood and community.
However, the Lilongwe gathering also demonstrated how religious occasions can contribute to wider national values, including peaceful coexistence, respect, tolerance and community service.
For Malawi, a country made up of people from different religious and cultural backgrounds, such messages have the potential to strengthen social cohesion and encourage citizens to focus on what unites them.
The Lilongwe Sunni Foundation’s appeal for compassion also highlights the important role religious communities can play in supporting vulnerable people and promoting a culture of generosity.
Call for Unity Among Malawians
The Ziyara celebrations ultimately carried a message extending beyond the day’s religious activities: Malawians should continue living together in peace, respecting their differences while working together for the common good.
Patel urged the faithful to translate the values associated with Ziyara into everyday life by showing kindness, supporting people in need and promoting understanding within their communities.
As Muslims in Lilongwe celebrated the occasion, the event served as a reminder that faith can also be a powerful platform for promoting peace, compassion and unity across society.
The celebration therefore brought together worship, fellowship and a wider call for Malawians to build a more peaceful and caring nation—one where people of different faiths can live side by side with mutual respect.
