Supporters of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) turned out in large numbers on Saturday, parading through the streets of Lilongwe on their way to Bingu National Stadium for the official launch of the party’s campaign.

The parade drew participants from various parts of the city, including Area 25, Area 49, and surrounding locations, creating a colourful display of party regalia and flags.

Men, women, and youth dressed in MCP colours danced, sang political songs, and chanted slogans as they marched along major routes leading to the stadium.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation as the supporters expressed their unwavering loyalty to the party and its presidential candidate, President Lazarus Chakwera.

Traffic slowed down along several roads due to the large procession, with motorists and passersby stopping to watch and cheer the enthusiastic crowds.

Vendors and roadside traders also took advantage of the occasion, selling party merchandise such as T-shirts, flags, and caps, while others sold refreshments to the parade participants.

The event marked the beginning of a crucial phase in the MCP’s preparations for the September 16 General Election.

Party organisers described the parade as a demonstration of the MCP’s grassroots strength and its ability to mobilise support from different urban areas.

The procession concluded at Bingu National Stadium, where thousands of supporters were already gathered for the campaign and manifesto launch.

The event, captured in vivid images by Dan Mhango, reflected the energy and optimism within the party as it seeks to secure another term in government.
