The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has bowed out of the race for Mzimba Central Constituency in the upcoming parliamentary elections, directing both Vitumbiko Mumba and Adamson Mkandawire to contest as independent candidates.
This follows a legal battle sparked by disputes in the party’s primary elections, which Mumba challenged in the Mzuzu High Court. Judge Justus Kashindo had ordered MCP to rerun the primaries by July 27—a directive the party has failed to comply with.
In a letter signed by MCP’s Director of Legal Affairs, George Jivason Kadzipatike, the party confirmed it will not field any candidate in the constituency. However, Kadzipatike emphasized that both Mumba and Mkandawire still remain members of the party despite running independently.
The party’s decision now sets the stage for a showdown between two of its own loyalists, but without the official party banner—leaving Mzimba Central voters with a choice between familiar faces turned rivals.
