MEC releases official list of approved parliamentary candidates for 16 September Elections

Lilongwe, Republic of Malawi-The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has officially released the list of parliamentary candidates approved to contest in the upcoming general elections scheduled for 16 September 2025.

The announcement comes after a rigorous nomination process during which candidates from various political parties submitted their papers for verification.

According to MEC, all candidates listed have successfully met the legal and procedural requirements necessary to participate in the elections.

In a statement, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, Director of Media and Public Relations at MEC, thanked all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and supporters, for their cooperation throughout the nomination phase.

The Commission has urged all Malawians to remain engaged and to observe peace as the electoral process continues into the next stages.

Mwafulirwa emphasized that MEC remains committed to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections, in line with Malawi’s constitutional and legal framework.

The approved list of candidates is expected to guide political campaigns and public debates leading up to the elections, ensuring voters have full information on their choices.

MEC has also reminded political actors to comply with electoral laws, including regulations governing campaign conduct and political rallies.
