42 MCP District Chairpersons and 3 Regional Chairpersons, have written a letter to their President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera requesting him to call for an emergency Convention of the MCP to be held before the end of November, 2025.
The party leaders have informed President Chakwera that arrangements for the necessary funding of this Convention have already been secured by members of the party that are committed to ensuring that the Convention is successfully held within November, 2025.

They say this request has been made out of respect for the rule of law, party unity, and democratic accountability observing that distinguished leaders before Chakwera such as Kamuzu Banda, Gwanda Chakuamba, and John Tembo, each retired honorably in recognition of the constitutional principle and party tradition.
In a letter dated 8th October, 2025 signed by Hon. Alex Major MCP- Kasungu, President Chakwera has been reminded that on the 11th August, 2025 he publicly declared that a mini-convention would be convened to review the party’s constitution before the end of this year.
The MCP leaders say regrettably, this mini-convention has not yet taken place, appealing to President Chakwera to fulfill his commitment within the stipulated time frame of November, 2025 saying according to MCP Constitution Article 30 provides that the control and management of the party and its operations, should be vested in the National Executive committee (NEC).
“Should there be no action within the period specified, the district committees are prepared in accordance with the MCP constitution to exercise their right to call for such a convention,’ reads the letter in part.
The MCP leaders say the general membership of the party believes that holding a convention at this juncture, will help renew the party’s structures, restore internal democracy, and strengthen the trust between the leadership and the membership base.
A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has accused MCP NEC of allowing President Chakwera raping both the Republican Constitution and the party’s Constitution.
Kamphangala said had it been that MCP NEC was alive, President Chakwera and three others, could not have time to invest powers in themselves to appoint Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba as Chakwera’s running mate from nowhere.
“Why calling for an emergency convention now, is it because MCP has lost the presidential elections? And had it been that President Chakwera won, was this mini- Convention important” he questioned.
