The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has moved to clear the air surrounding the return of Women Football Association chairperson Adellade Migogo from Morocco while the Malawi Scorchers continue their historic campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

FAM Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said Migogo travelled to Morocco as an invited guest to watch the tournament’s group-stage matches and was never part of the official Scorchers delegation.

Zakazaka said Migogo was among several FAM officials who had been invited to attend the group-stage matches, a group that also included FAM executive members Chimango Munthali, Lameck Khonje, Daudi Mtanthiko, Gilbert Mitawa and Patrick Kapanga.

According to Zakazaka, the travelling officials were informed before departure that their stay in Morocco would end after Malawi’s group-stage fixture against Zambia, regardless of how far the Scorchers progressed in the tournament.

“Prior to their departure, all members of the group had been clearly informed of the travel arrangement which includes that they will return to Malawi after the Zambia match, irrespective of whether Malawi qualified for the quarter finals or finals in Morocco,” Zakazaka said.

He added that the officials therefore returned home in accordance with the arrangements communicated to them before the trip.

The clarification comes as questions surrounding Migogo’s departure generated discussion on social media, particularly because the Scorchers have since advanced deep into the competition.

FAM says the officials who have remained in Morocco are those directly attached to the Scorchers’ official delegation, together with FAM president Fleetwood Haiya and the head of delegation.

The association’s explanation seeks to separate the administrative travel arrangements for invited guests from the official team delegation currently supporting Malawi’s campaign.

Meanwhile, sports analyst Christopher Njeula has called on Malawians to exercise caution when discussing developments around the national team, particularly during major tournaments.

Njeula said social media discussions can easily create confusion when information is circulated before the relevant authorities have been given an opportunity to explain what actually happened.

His appeal comes at a particularly important moment for the Scorchers, who have already written a new chapter in Malawi’s women’s football history by reaching the WAFCON final.

Malawi secured their place in the final after overcoming Algeria on Wednesday, setting up a decisive meeting with Cameroon on Sunday.

With the country now looking towards the biggest match of the Scorchers’ campaign, FAM’s clarification is intended to put the issue of Migogo’s return to rest and refocus attention on the team’s pursuit of continental glory.

For the Scorchers, the focus is now firmly on Cameroon—and an opportunity to turn an extraordinary tournament run into Malawi’s greatest achievement in women’s football.
