President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, in his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, has called on Zambians to maintain peace, tolerance and restraint as the country prepares to hold its General Elections on August 13, 2026.

Mutharika has urged all eligible voters to exercise their constitutional and democratic right to vote peacefully and responsibly, while encouraging political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to place the interests of Zambia above political differences.

In his message ahead of the elections, Mutharika stressed the importance of maintaining peace before, during and after the polls, saying a peaceful electoral environment is essential for citizens to freely participate in the democratic process.

He has also called on political leaders and their supporters to demonstrate maturity and respect for differing political views, urging them to avoid actions or statements that could create tension, violence or division.

The call comes as Zambians prepare to choose their leaders in an election that is expected to attract significant public and political attention.

Mutharika said credible, free and fair elections are critical to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peaceful political and economic transitions across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

He further encouraged citizens to use established democratic and legal mechanisms to address any concerns arising from the electoral process rather than resorting to violence or confrontation.

The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation plays a key role in promoting peace, security, political stability and democratic governance among member states.

Mutharika’s appeal therefore places emphasis not only on the conduct of voters but also on the responsibility of political parties, candidates, electoral authorities, security agencies, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to contribute to a peaceful electoral environment.

The President’s message also highlights the regional importance of Zambia’s elections. As a member of SADC, Zambia’s political stability has implications beyond its borders, particularly for regional cooperation, trade, investment and economic development.

A peaceful election, according to Mutharika’s appeal, would help reinforce public confidence in democratic processes while supporting a smooth political transition and continued stability.

He has therefore urged Zambians to embrace tolerance and respect the outcome of the democratic process, stressing that political disagreements should not undermine national unity or peace.

The August 13 elections will put Zambia’s democratic institutions and political stakeholders in focus as voters exercise their right to determine the country’s political leadership.

Mutharika has consequently appealed to all Zambians to make peace a priority and ensure that the electoral process is conducted in an atmosphere of freedom, tolerance and respect.

He has also encouraged citizens to participate actively and peacefully, saying credible elections remain an important foundation for democracy, good governance and sustainable development in Zambia and the wider SADC region.
