Chakwera Arrives In New York

By Suleman Chitera Sep15,2022

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has arrived in New York City, in the United States of America where he is scheduled to attend the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Upon arrival, the Malawi leader was met by Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba, Dr Agnes Chimbiri Molande who is the Permanent Ambassador and Representative to the United Nations and Justice Esme Chombo, Malawi’s Ambassador to the United States of America among other dignitaries.

With over 40 bilateral and multilateral engagements waiting for the President’s attention, Tembo said Dr Chakwera will among other engagements deliver a speech to the UNGA on Thursday, 22 September 2022, sign the Millennium Challenge Corporation compact number 2 in Washington DC, attend and speak at the UN Education Summit and meet the president of the European Union.

As a champion of the Global Replenishment Fund which mobilises resources for procurement of Antiretroviral drugs which are distributed for free to combat HIV/AIDS, Dr Chakwera will join other leaders in lobbying and mobilising resources to sustain the fund.

Being Chairperson of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), the President is expected to speak strongly for debt relief and cancellation for debt-burdened developing countries that have signalled distress in their debt levels according to Malawi’s Foreign Affairs Minister.

“You can see for yourself that the President is not here for a jolly walk but strictly on official assignments aimed at finding solutions to the challenges Malawi is facing,” said Tembo.

Three key assignments on Dr Chakwera’s tight schedule include his address at the UNGA on 22nd September, the signing of the Millennium Challenge Corporation compact number two with the US Government and the meeting he has with the president of the European Union.
