Lilongwe, Malawi — The Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) has commenced restoration works on the 20-megawatt (MW) Unit 6 at Nkula B Hydropower Station, which has been offline for five weeks following a breakdown.

EGENCO says the restoration follows the arrival of a critical spare part, the shaft, allowing engineers to begin maintenance work on the affected generating unit.

The restoration works are expected to be completed by the end of October 2026, when Unit 6 is scheduled to return to service.

According to EGENCO, Unit 6 has been on forced outage to allow the replacement of worn-out thrust bearing pads and corrective maintenance on the turbine assembly.

Once the restoration is completed, the return of Unit 6 is expected to restore 20MW of electricity generation capacity to Malawi’s national grid.

The restoration comes as Malawi continues to focus on improving electricity generation capacity and the reliability of the national power supply.

The return of the Nkula B Unit 6 to service is therefore expected to provide additional generation capacity to the national grid once the maintenance works are successfully completed.
