Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) Commissioner Dr. Anthony Mukumbwa has said they intend to host a credible record breaking general election in 2025 using the new electoral laws.
Mukumbwa said this Monday in Karonga while opening MEC’s awareness meeting with electoral stakeholders in Karonga on new electoral laws, boundaries and centres which has brought together chiefs, political party and Civil Society Organisation (CSO) representatives and the District Elections Supervisory Team (DEST).
“Using the new electoral laws which are contained in the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act of 2023, we will conduct a credible, peaceful election in 2025 whereby no one will be going to courts to challenge the results,”Mukumbwa said.
“For example, polling time has changed from 6am to 6pm to 6am to 4pm.Again, anyone who insults another individual during campaign will now be answerable since it’s now a criminal offence and the polling day is now a public holiday which was not the case in the past,”he added.
The Commissioner has urged Chiefs, CSO’s and other stakeholders to help spread the message on the new changes for voters to be aware and prepare for the 2025 general election.
According to the new Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Act, registration for the 2025 Tripartite Election slated to begin in September 2024 will only be based on National Identity Cards.
