Mighty Mukuru Wanderers president Thomson Mpinganjira says he is considering withdrawing his sponsorship for the club for failing to live up to expectations.
The business mogul and philanthropist said this in an interview on Saturday following the Nomads’ 1-0 loss to rookies Extreme FC in a TNM Super League match at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
The Nomads put up a pathetic performance which handed the Mchinji-based side their first win in the domestic top-flight.
Mpinganjira, who is the Lali Lubani Road outfit’s highest sponsor through his Ekhaya Farms Foods Limited, said he is not amused with the team’s struggles, considering the fortune he and Mukuru are pumping into the team.
He said: “This might be my last season. I cannot abandon the team mid-season, but it surely looks that way.
“As a businessperson, I have other competing and pressing needs for this money other than spend it on a team that is failing to live to expectations. I think we just can’t go on like this.”
Mpinganjira, who doubles as the club’s board chairperson, doubted the Nomads capacity to compete for the title if they cannot beat minnows.
Besides Ekhaya’s K410 million sponsorship, he spent over K40 million on buying players and for signing-on fees before the start of the season.
The club’s technical subcommittee chairperson Limbani Magomero said Mpinganjira cannot be blamed after all that he has done for the club.
On the team’s performance, Magomero said: “It was terrible and unacceptable.”
The club’s second assistant coach Alfred Manyozo Jnr said they have no excuse for the loss.
He said: “By our standards, we were very poor against a side that was at the bottom of the table and had not won a match.”
Despite the loss, the Nomads remain third in the 16-team league with 17 points from nine matches.
